20 Hockey Teams With Bizarre Names
Sometimes, when you’re catching up on all the Scores running across the bottom of the screen on ESPN, you just have to wonder where some of those schools and towns came up with their names and mascots. Cleveland Browns? Sure, we all know it was the original owner’s last name, but if you’re new to the NFL, it could seem a little odd. Especially since their helmets and stripes are orange. The Boston Bruins? Yes, bears are a cool, beastly logo, but when’s the last time you heard of a bear meandering through Boston? The Utah Jazz? Yes, sure, they originally hung their uniforms in New Orleans where the ‘Jazz’ name actually makes sense, but again, just getting into the NBA: kind of a head-scratcher.
Well, there are a ton of these kinds of teams around the sporting world, so I figured I’d start this little series with some bizarrely-named junior hockey league teams. Yes, some of these are actually like AA and AAA, Semi-Pro, and Farm Teams, but for the sake of argument: they’re not NHL, so they’re junior. Anyway, check ‘em out.

Then of course there are beer league teams, like the Screaming Squirrels, a team I previously played on with Ben.

My favorite part about the Wheat Kings is that they currently have a player on their team whose name is Wheaton King. How fitting is that??
how about the angry beavers, red rockets, and a few others http://www.pimwahl.com
Geografer: That’s almost too unbelievable that it HAS to be true!

You’ve got the Brandon Wheat Kings up there, but no love for the Prince George Spruce Kings or the Victoria Salmon Kings?
I play on a hockey team called “Astroglide”. I offered dozens of other options, but the guys apparently have an appreciation for quality personal lubricant.
I reckon you could name a commodity and there is a team somewhere (typically in Canada, but not nece-celery) that attaches “Kings” to it. Above mention Wheat Kings, Salmon Kings, Spruce Kings are just the tip of the iceberg. Nickel Kings and Paper Kings spring to mind as well. And while I’m at it, I don’t know if it’s just that I grew up hearing the name, but I don’t see what’s so bizarre about Wheat Kings. Or Gulls. Or Phantoms. Really? Phantoms is bizarre? F’n Mighty Ducks are out there (posthumously) but Phantoms is bizarre? Not to mention Attack and Crunch. Is it because they are typically verbs rather than nouns? Again I don’t think twice about those because they’ve been around for a while. Mud Bugs/Solar Bears/Every-other-minor-pro-team-in-the-American-South-that-puts-”Ice”-in-the-name-and/or-feels-it-necessary-to-insert-a-hockey-stick-into-the-logo? Yes, bizarre. No team can be taken seriously when there is a stick in the logo. Yes, I’m talking to you Atlanta, Florida, Pittsburgh, and San Jose. Washington and NYI are borderline.
End sleep deprived unfocused rant here.
What? No love for the Toledeo Walleye?
Really bizarre names…but why would the “San Diego Gulls” be a bizarre name? I used to watch them all the time when I lived in San Diego…I always that it was a cool name and a cool logo.
I was partial to the now defunct team from Georgia: Macon Whoopee.
Wautel – Now that’s a name I would like for my hockey team. I bet the Ice Girls were hot…:)
