Though he never played in the NHL, and perhaps was just good enough to be on the bench as an alternate on your team, I believe that Alton White deserves some mention. Alton played some years in the WHA, and has the distinction of being the first black hockey player to score 20 goals in a major league season, a major league, which the WHA was at the time. During the 1972-73 season, he scored 21 goals and had 21 assists for the Los Angeles Sharks. He was a very speedy guy and a hard working player. I think retired and mover to vancouver. Another player who could possibly crack the list, sooner rather than later, is the L.A. Kings rising star, Wayne Simmonds, who is a master stickhandler and hustler, a real whiz.

See the Black Hockey Players wall of fame for more info. http://www.freewebs.com/blackhockeyplayers/index.html. We'll get there, one draft year at a time.

I live for the game of hockey. As a Afro-American player still looking for a break,I wonder where the "Could Have Been" go?
Against all odds of limited knowledge
of training and development camps, financial restraints of private educational connections (I attended public school), and average academic grades (community college), I search for ways to play real hockey and not just settle for drop-in.
There must be somewhere to go? As spoken by O'ree, "I don't want to play black hockey, I just want to play hockey".
"HELP"

I'd definitely say look out for Wayne Simmonds on the L.A. Kings in the future, as well as P.K. Subban who tore it up on the blueline for Team Canada at the WJC just a couple of weeks ago. As an African American female who loves hockey, I hope to see more minorities of all shades lacing up in the future. Vive le hockey!

Saying Kevin Love is unathletic is all relative. Next to Butterbean he's fairly nimble, but for the NBA I think even Love would admit he's not that swift. White announcers will say it, and white general managers would probably admit it. Doesn't make him a bad player. Everyone has some physical limitations.

You state that white guys trying to make the NBA don't have to deal with racism, prejudice. I beg to differ. While I'm sure its not to the level that the black players dealt with in the NHL, whites have to deal with sterotypes (can't jump, scrappy, hustler, good free throw shooter, etc.). For example, in your earlier article you state that Kevin Love is not that athletic. According to who? Finally, I kind of like reading articles like this if they are good natured. It kind of brings to light subjects that people are reluctant to talk about.

Tough list to crack. A couple of names that I think I would put on my list.

Peter Worrel - Maybe it is because I have an autographed puck for him, or maybe it is because he is the Shaq of the NHL at 6'7" 230lbs, but I love me some Peter Worrel. Way better fighter for my money than those other guys on the list, although they probably possess more offensive skill.

Johnny Oduya - I gotta think he deserves to make this list over Jason Doig. As a Caps fan, I saw Doig play a ton of games, and Oduya has him beat by a mile. Amazingly enough he is a former Caps draft pick, and black guy from Sweden. Who knew.

Ray Emery - Ray would get a spot on my team, just for the video of him pummeling Martin Biron, and then taking on Andrew Peters
