The Gorgeous Ladies of Dr. WHO

Companions 560x350

Amid the news that our most recent and beloved incarnation of the Doctor, one David Tennant, is to be replaced at year’s end (under his own power, I might add… he’s not being forced out or anything), I thought it might be fun to list the top 10 lovely ladies who have partnered with our Gallifreyan Time Lord over the years. Now each of these woman have not just been on the show, but have actually joined the Doctor on an adventure or several. I’ve also included (for those Doctor fans) a pic of the new companion as well as the new logo. So get on board the TARDIS and let’s meet the ladies.

Jacqueline Hill
As Barbara Wright w/ William Hartnell

Barbara first got involved with the Doctor’s life through his granddaughter, Susan. She had a particular interest in the Aztecs. The strange gaps in Susan’s knowledge and her curious ability to know what she should not have known, intrigued her. Barbara decided to follow Susan home to 76 Totter’s Lane when they discovered the TARDIS and the Doctor, who abducted them. Odd way to become pals, dontcha think?

Anneke Wills
As Polly Wright w/William Hartnell & Patrick Troughton

Polly was confident, and not afraid to use her feminine abilities. She used her ‘sexy’, to enlist the help of Red Coat Algernon Pfinch while the travellers were in the Scottish Highlands. She struck up a relationship with Pfinch, and teased him whenever they met, often calling him ‘Algy’, and she soon realized that he had developed an admiration for her. The teasing and banter with Pfinch was part of an ongoing development of their relationship. She was chatting him up when she met him, and she was still chatting him up when they left the TARDIS together.

Maureen O’Brian
As Vicki Pallister w/ William Hartnell

When the TARDIS landed on Dido, Barbara Wright, one of the travelers (see number 9) used a flare gun to kill Sandy, a Didonian sand beast, thinking it a threat to Vicki. When the Doctor discovered the truth and the Didonians appeared to take revenge on them, she left with the others in the TARDIS.

7

Bonnie Langford
As Melanie Bush w/ Colin Baker & Sylvester McCoy

Mel was a computer programmer from the 20th century who came from the village of Pease Pottage in West Sussex, England. She was a health enthusiast and a vegetarian, often encouraging the slightly portly Sixth Doctor to exercise more. She was present (albeit unconscious at the time) when the Sixth Doctor regenerated into his seventh incarnation, and continued to travel with him.

6

Elisabeth Sladen
As Sarah Jane Smith w/ John Pertwee, Tom Baker & David Tennant

Sarah Jane Smith was originally a journalist and then companion with the third and then fourth incarnations of the Doctor. Afterwards, still a journalist, she worked first with K-9 Mark III and then alone, uncovering evil plots on the side. In the late 2000s, while living in Ealing, she worked with her adopted son Luke and several young friends to fight evil aliens.

5

Nicola Bryant
As Peri Brown w/ Peter Davison & Colin Baker

Peri studied botany and also had an interest in archaeology. Circa 1984, she encountered the Doctor and Turlough on the island of Lanzarote. The shape-shifting android Kamelion, controlled by the Master at the time, assumed the form of Peri’s step-father, Professor Howard Foster, and later that of the Master himself, before seizing control of the TARDIS to take her to the planet Sarn to meet the real Master. After the destruction of Kamelion, Peri joined the Doctor on his travels.

4

Sophie Aldred
As Ace w/ Sylvester McCoy

Ace was working as a waitress in a bar on Iceworld in the far future when she first met the Doctor. She had been a troubled teen on Earth, having been expelled from school for blowing up the art room as a “creative statement”. On Iceworld she met the Doctor and his companion Mel. When Mel left the Doctor at the conclusion of their battle with Kane, he offered to take Ace with him in the TARDIS, and she happily accepted.

3

Catherine Tate
As Donna Noble w/ David Tennant

Donna Noble was a fiercely independent companion of the Tenth Doctor. Despite humble origins, Donna Noble is also noted by Rose Tyler as unknowingly being the most important woman in all of creation. After her mind was transformed into that of a Time Lord, she became unstable after saving the universe with the sheer amount of knowledge and the Time Lord Consciousness overwhelming her human brain. The Doctor, to save her life, had to suppress her memories of him and as such she no longer remembers anything about their travels, or even recognizes him.

2

Freema Agyeman
As Martha Jones w/ David Tennant

In 2008, Martha was working at the Royal Hope Hospital on the day it was transported to the Moon by the Judoon. Remaining calm while those around her panicked, Martha worked alongside the the Doctor (who was posing as a patient named John Smith) to track down the Plasmavore. Later that evening, a recovering Martha was approached by the Doctor, who revealed that he was a Time Lord and invited her to join him for a ‘single’ trip through time and space in the TARDIS.

1

Billie Piper
As Rose Tyler w/ Christopher Eccleston & David Tennant

One night, after a store had closed, Rose witnessed several mannequins coming to life in the basement of the shop building. Although she suspected the models were someone’s idea of a practical joke, the mannequins were actually Autons. After her escape as she returned home, she searched for more information on the Internet about the strange man and found Clive Finch, a man who had been keeping track of the Doctor’s appearances on Earth. Ultimately, Rose joined him in his TARDIS after saving his life.
