The McLobster Sandwich and other McMenu Madness

Artist's rendering of a McLobster

As you might have read on our website (or otherwise heard), there’s this new phenomena spreading called the McGangBang. In doing research (or whatever you call searching the Internet for info) for the McGangBang, I came across something else called the McLobster. Originally, I thought it was a joke. McDonald’s isn’t exactly high brow enough to serve Lobster, now is it? I’d consider lobster to be a seafood delicacy. But I soon came to realize that it indeed was real and began shaking in my boots at the prospect of such a McFood.

To be fair, the McLobster is hardly new. It’s been around for several years, but unless you live in Eastern Canada or New England, you might not be aware of the crustaceous cousin of the Filet-o-Fish. It comes and goes, much like the McRib, and the maritime treat basically represents McDonald’s take on the venerable lobster roll. The disturbing mix of lobster and bread is smothered in white “McLobster sauce”, which is some combination of mayonnaise, tartar sauce, and possibly some salad dressing. Shredded lettuce and bits of celery are also included. Photo below by “are you gonna eat that?”

Actual McLobster

Actual McLobster

And in case you’re wondering, it is real lobster meat in the sandwich. It’s actually not priced all that differently from typical lobster rolls, so don’t be too worried. Reports indicate that it’s a decent representation of the sandwich, so maybe you should go out and try a McLobster next time you’re in New England or the Maritime Provinces of Canada. And if you’re French-Canadian, be sure to ask for the McHomard instead. What’s the worst that can happen? Actually, scratch that last part, you probably don’t want to think about it too much…

Here are a couple additional McLobster photos:

And if you need further proof of it’s existence, here’s a commercial…

Of course, this opens the door to a whole host of regional foods. I began to wonder, what else I was missing out on living in the D.C. area. Was there a McGrits? A McTofu? And really, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. What about worldwide? Beyond the Pulp Fiction famed Royale with Cheese, what other creations cater to the various cultures around the world. Here are some examples:

spam-menu

spam

The Big Mac morphs into the Chicken Maharaja Mac (originally a mutton burger), containing two grilled chicken patties with a smoke-flavored mayonnaise, fresh onions, tomatoes, and cheddar cheese surrounded by a toasted sesame seeded bun. Also available in a lamb version. The McCurry is a rectangular shaped crust that is topped with a creamy sauce (made without eggs), and vegetables and/or meat. You might also find the Pizza McPuff, which replaces the cream sauce with a tomato-based sauce and is topped like a pizza. As noted on the menu, the vegetarian dishes (marked in green) and meat dishes (marked in red) are prepared in separate areas of the restaurant in respect for vegetarians. (Photo by counterclockwise)

McDonald’s wants to feed your inner Mexican….from Scandinavia? In Finland this comes with BBQ sauce, but in other parts of the world it comes with sour cream and/or spicy taco/salsa sauce. Sweden will even toss in a side of nachos. In fact, while the name remains the same, the sandwich really varies from place to place. In some locations, you can get it with chicken instead of beef. 1. thanks for using my image! awesome post.

    the tamago burger was gross.

  2. In my head, the Tamago sounds awesome (can’t say the same for some of the other creations). I had a pizza with a fried egg on it in France, which was pretty good. So I’m thinking egg plus a food I like is a winning combo. Hopefully it’s only McDonald’s that messes up the combo.

  3. Some people I have traveled with have thought it was odd that I wanted to check out the McDonald’s in other countries. I have always liked seeing what unique local items they have on the menus. Of course, my mom always likes seeking them out in other countries as it is often the only place with Diet Coke as a fountain drink.

  4. The Ebi Filet-o is actually a shrimp burger

  5. popurls.com // popular today…

story has entered the popular today section on popurls.com…

  6. They no longer serve the rice burgers in the Philippines. Random fact: the Philippines is the only country where McDonalds isn’t the highest earning fast food chain.

Anyway, that’s what globalization gets you. Multinational corporations need to adapt to the culture of their host countries in order to thrive.

  7. I think I am going to McBarf.

  8. I remember seeing a McPink at a McDonald’s in Rome about 5 years ago. I never found out what it was though. Info?

  9. Actually the McArabia isn’t bad. In Dubai they also had a fish stick type meal and a chicken patty type of thing. Both decent. On the other hand there is a constant attempt to get you to order something other than what you came in for. Not for any bad reason, they just would try to get you to take what was up in the window rather than wait for what you order. Pretty funny most of the time actually.

  10. ummm…they sell cinnamon melts by where i live in NJ so umm…false

  11. Don’t forget McRamen… I spotted it in Hawaii, served in a styrofoam cup! Great article and I fully endorse the McGangBang… delicious!

  12. The Cinnamon melts are available in Alaska, so is the McKinley Mac, which is a big mac made with quarter pounder patties or some such.

  13. Providences, eh? In Canada we have provinces, not providences. Thanks.

  14. The Tamago Burger, over the summer I had the Mega Tamago in Japan, and it was delicious and filling, eating anything else with it, even fries, left you plenty overstuffed

  15. You forgot the Australian McCafe, With about 40 different cakes, 10 different coffees, Fruit and all that coffee shop kinda stuff. Also you missed the double quater with chilli which is my favourite. MMmm

  16. i thought it was funny when i saw a european tourist ask for a beer at a mcdonalds here in nyc. he could not fucking believe there was no beer.

  17. After several years they stopped making the McOz in Australian stores, sort of miss the beetroot and cooked onion. The McFeast Deluxe made a comeback in it’s place. There are also several “real” chicken burgers and wraps on the menu now.

Here is the current listing for Australia.

  18. I plan to travel the world some day, now i have places to go when doing it… All the different types of McDonalds.

  20. McDonalds serves shit wherever in the world you may be.

  21. McD’s in India (at least in Uttar Pradesh) have a vegetable burger “surprise”, which was a veggie pattie topped with a lot of (what I suspect was) cheddar cheese.

Protip: don’t cause trouble, because at least at the one I ate at, there was a guard armed with a machine gun.

  22. Living in Eastern Canada, McLobster comes around for maybe a month or so every year.
Also, maybe 10 years or so back I can remember eating pizza at the local McDonald’s…it was garbage.
We also have Cinnamon Melts here also, I figured they were common across North America.

  26. The McAloo Tikki Burger is actually really good but wow, the heartburn. The best part is that the McDonalds I went to in India had a doorman.

  28. Also in Japan are the Pita Mac (Big Mac in a pita) and the Salad Mac (all the components of a Big Mac, plus some more lettuce mixed up as a salad).

  29. McD’s serves Brats in Wisconsin every now and then.

  30. The Poutine is served in more provinces than just Quebec, it is also at some of them in Ontario. Oh and we have the Cinnamon Melts in Ontario as well. And you forgot the Eggnog Milkshake at x-mas time!

  37. Ya, Canada has the cinnamon melts and we used to have pizza. They just recently got rid of the deli sandwiches but they were different from the Aussie ones.

When I was in Costa Rica I went to a McD’s and although I didn’t notice anything different on the menu there were a couple of different things. Like they leave the skin on their fries and instead of ketchup they hand out packs of mayo.

  38. Also, in Hong Kong… There used to be McEgg sandwiches for breakfast for a while but not anymore. There are now Ham n Cheese breakfast burgers (no sauce) and twisty pasta in soup. A new Double Ham burger has recently been made available to the regular menu. There were a few burgers that were tested and are now regular items, including the Grilled Chicken Burger, the Big n Tasty (sort of like a quarter pounder but with a thousand island-like sauce), and some items are available only after 9pm, including the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese, and Double Filet o Fish. There are seasonal items all the time, including Spicy Grilled Chicken Burgers, McPepper burgers, Shogun burgers (previously mentioned), Rice burgers, and Shake Shake Fries which have powdered flavoring you add by shaking them in a bag. McDonald’s in China also have different items, and I bet some items are tested in China before being approved in places like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. The Constants? Coke and Fries, the same all around the world.

  39. [...] The McLobster Sandwich, and other McMenu Madness (Gunaxin) [...]

  40. yeah, Cinnamon Melts in the Maritimes for sure. Used to have pizza…

We also have a crazy customization here (nova scotia) that i have yet to find in other provinces. “like a mac”, adds a bit of mac sauce to anything even a Filet O’ Fish (*gags a little). If you order a double cheese “dressed like a mac” it’s practically identical to a big mac (save for the middle bread) and it’s a third of the cost.

  41. I remember having a Heineken at the mcdonalds in the athens airport. Also, saw a shrimp cocktail with six pieces of shrimp somewhere in Switzerland.

  42. I have no idea why, but the McLobster actually sounds really good.

I had the Local Deluxe Breakfast the last time I was in Hawaii. Their Portuguese sausage wasn’t very spicy, which was disappointing. The Spam was good, but Spam is Spam.

  47. The cinnamon melts looks a lot like something called Monkey Bread, with it breaking into bite size pieces. You can already guess the proper name for it: McMonkey Bread

  48. Oh crap. I purposely avoid McDonald’s restaurants in foreign countries but this post has me rethinking that policy.

  49. CinnaMelts are also in the United States. The most easy thing they have to make….you just have to microwave it for 2 minutes, so they shouldnt mind if you just ask them to leave it frozen so you can cook it at home
