Top Ten Songs About Suicide

Morbid? Yes. But look at the list and you’ll admit to rocking out to these songs. A simple search on Wikipedia lists them (and I encourage anyone who actually takes the time to edit Wikipedia to add more). So, in typical Gunaxin fashion, we pick the top ten:

10

Youth of the Nation
P.O.D. – Satellite – 2002

Unlike most of these other songs, this one tells a few short stories about people with major problems, including this one.

Johnny boy always played the fool
He broke all the rules
So you would think he was cool
He was never really one of the guys
No matter how hard he tried
Often thought of suicide
It’s kind of hard when you ain’t got no friends
He put his life to an end
They might remember him then
You cross the line and there’s no turning back
Told the world how he felt
With the sound of a gat

Jeremy
Pearl Jam – Ten – 1991

On January 8, 1991, Jeremy Wade Delle, 15, shot himself with a .357 Magnum in front of his class at a suburban Dallas high school. Eddie Vedder read about the suicide and combined it with a similar incident at his junior high.

At home, drawing pictures of mountain tops
With him on top lemin yellow sun, arms raised in a v
And the dead lay in pools of maroon below
Daddy didn’t give attention
Oh, to the fact that mommy didn’t care
King Jeremy the wicked…oh, ruled his world…
Jeremy spoke in class today…

8

Loser
3 Doors Down – The Better Life – 2000

On an terrific album, this song by far is the saddest.

You’re getting closer to pushing me off of life’s little edge
cause I’m a loser
and sooner or later you know I’ll be dead
You’re getting closer
you’re holding the rope and I’m taking the fall
cause I’m a loser
I’m a loser yeah

7

Hold On
Good Charlotte – The Young and the Hopeless – 2003

This Green Day ripoff band did good with this one, putting out a music video that features suicide survivors talking about their experiences.

This world, this world is cold
But you don’t, you don’t have to go
You’re feeling sad you’re feeling lonely
And no one seems to care
You’re mother’s gone and your father hits you
This pain you cannot bare

6

Jumper
Third Eye Blind – Third Eye Blind – 1997

Wish you would step off from that ledge, my friend. Need I say more?

I would understand
The angry boy a bit too insane
Icing over a secret pain
You know you don’t belong
You’re the first to fight
You’re way too loud
You’re the flash of light on a burial shroud
I know somethings wrong
Well everyone I know has got a reason
To say put the past away

5

Last Resort
Papa Roach – Infest – 2000

I don’t think this one even needs explanation.

Cut my life into pieces
I’ve reached my last resort, suffocation, no breathing
Don’t give a f&@k if I cut my arms bleeding
Would it be wrong, would it be right
If I took my life tonight, chance are that I might
Mutilation out of sight and I’m contemplating suicide
Cause I’m losing my sight, losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I’m fine
Nothing’s alright, nothing is fine
I’m running and I’m crying

4

Adam’s Song
Blink-182 – Enema of the State – 2000

Unlike just about every other one of Blink-182’s songs, this one is serious and sad as hell. Too many of us remember those happy, innocent days of childhood merging into those lonely, depressing days as a teenager. And many of us know someone who didn’t make it.

I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn’t wait to get outside
The world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over we’d survived
I couldn’t wait till I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

3

Suicide Solution
Ozzy Osbourne – Blizzard of Ozz – 1980

Ozzy was cleared of wrongdoing after parents of suicide victims complained about him in court. But let’s face it, even if he were found liable, there would be no winner in that situation. Still, the song rocks.

Wine is fine but whiskeys quicker
Suicide is slow with liquor
Take a bottle and drown your sorrows
Then it floods away tomorrows

2

A Tout le Monde
Megadeth – Youthanasia – 1994

Dave Mustaine insists this song is not about suicide. He said in a 1994 interview: “It’s not a suicide song. What it is, it’s, you, it’s when people have a loved one that dies and they end on a bad note, you know, they wish that they could say something to them.” I love Dave Mustaine, but he should try explaining that to a guy with a gun to his head and thinking his lyrics. Well, at the very least, it’s a good lesson in French. (BTW, I prefer the 2007 version with Cristina Scabbia)

A tout le monde (To everybody)
A tout mes amis (To all my friends)
Je vous aime (I love you)
Je dois partir (I must leave)
These are the last words
I’ll ever speak
And they’ll set me free

1

Fade to Black
Metallica – Ride the Lightning – 1984

I don’t think there’s any question about this one.

Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Where’s Nirvana, you ask? Again, this list is songs about suicide, not about bands that have songs to commit suicide to (BTW, read the lyrics of Adam’s Song carefully and you’ll see a nod to Nirvana). That’s a different list, with far more options to choose from. We don’t endorse that here. Now go make your playlist on your iPod.
