Top Ten Songs About Suicide

Morbid? Yes. But look at the list and you’ll admit to rocking out to these songs. A simple search on Wikipedia lists them (and I encourage anyone who actually takes the time to edit Wikipedia to add more). So, in typical Gunaxin fashion, we pick the top ten:

images2110. Youth of the Nation

P.O.D. – Satellite – 2002. Unlike most of these other songs, this one tells a few short stories about people with major problems, including this one:

Johnny boy always played the fool
He broke all the rules
So you would think he was cool
He was never really one of the guys
No matter how hard he tried
Often thought of suicide
It’s kind of hard when you ain’t got no friends
He put his life to an end
They might remember him then
You cross the line and there’s no turning back
Told the world how he felt
With the sound of a gat

Lyrics | P.O.D. – Youth Of The Nation lyrics

images229. Jeremy

Pearl Jam – Ten – 1991. This is one that some may argue whether or not it is about suicide, but it might as well be. Perhaps the most popular song overall on this list, it’s reminiscent of what happened at Columbine High School about eight years after it came out.

At home, drawing pictures of mountain tops
With him on top lemin yellow sun, arms raised in a v
And the dead lay in pools of maroon below
Daddy didn’t give attention
Oh, to the fact that mommy didn’t care
King Jeremy the wicked…oh, ruled his world…
Jeremy spoke in class today…

Watch it here

images238. Loser

3 Doors Down – The Better Life. On an terrific album, this song by far is the saddest.

You’re getting closer to pushing me off of life’s little edge cause I’m a loser
and sooner or later you know I’ll be dead
You’re getting closer you’re holding
the rope and I’m taking the fall cause I’m a loser I’m a loser yeah

images247. Hold On

Good Charlotte – The Young and the Hopeless – 2003. This Green Day ripoff band did good with this one, putting out a music video that features suicide survivors talking about their experiences.

This world, this world is cold
But you don’t, you don’t have to go
You’re feeling sad you’re feeling lonely
And no one seems to care
You’re mother’s gone and your father hits you
This pain you cannot bare

8236. Jumper

Third Eye Blind – Third Eye Blind – 1997. Wish you would step off from that ledge, my friend. Need I say more?

I would understand
The angry boy a bit too insane
Icing over a secret pain
You know you don’t belong
You’re the first to fight
You’re way too loud
You’re the flash of light on a burial shroud
I know somethings wrong
Well everyone I know has got a reason
To say put the past away

images255. Last Resort

Papa Roach – Infest – 2000. I don’t think this one even needs explanation.

Cut my life into pieces
I’ve reached my last resort, suffocation, no breathing
Don’t give a f&@k if I cut my arms bleeding
Would it be wrong, would it be right
If I took my life tonight, chance are that I might
Mutilation out of sight and I’m contemplating suicide
Cause I’m losing my sight, losing my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I’m fine
Nothing’s alright, nothing is fine
I’m running and I’m crying

images264. Adam’s Song

Blink-182 – Enema of the State – 2000. Unlike just about every other one of Blink-182’s songs, this one is serious and sad as hell. Too many of us remember those happy, innocent days of childhood merging into those lonely, depressing days as a teenager. And many of us know someone who didn’t make it.

I never conquered, rarely came
16 just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn’t wait to get outside
The world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over we’d survived
I couldn’t wait till I got home
To pass the time in my room alone

images283. Suicide Solution

Ozzy Osbourne – Blizzard of Ozz – 1980. Ozzy was cleared of wrongdoing after parents of suicide victims complained about him in court. But let’s face it, even if he were found liable, there would be no winner in that situation. Still, the song rocks.

Wine is fine but whiskeys quicker
Suicide is slow with liquor
Take a bottle and drown your sorrows
Then it floods away tomorrows

images292. A Tout le Monde

Megadeth – Youthanasia – 1994. Dave Mustaine insists this song is not about suicide. He said in a 1994 interview: “It’s not a suicide song. What it is, it’s, you, it’s when people have a loved one that dies and they end on a bad note, you know, they wish that they could say something to them.” I love Dave Mustaine, but he should try explaining that to a guy with a gun to his head and thinking his lyrics. Well, at the very least, it’s a good lesson in French. (BTW, I prefer the 2007 version with Cristina Scabbia)

A tout le monde (To everybody)
A tout mes amis (To all my friends)
Je vous aime (I love you)
Je dois partir (I must leave)
These are the last words
I’ll ever speak
And they’ll set me free

images301. Fade to Black

Metallica – Ride the Lightning – 1984. I don’t think there’s any question about this one.

Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Where’s Nirvana, you ask? Again, this list is songs about suicide, not about bands that have songs to commit suicide to (BTW, read the lyrics of Adam’s Song carefully and you’ll see a nod to Nirvana). That’s a different list, with far more options to choose from. We don’t endorse that here. Now go make your playlist on your iPod.

  1. I think you’re forgetting one big one (bonus points for being the theme song of one of the biggest shows of all-time):

    ‘Cause suicide is painless
    it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
…and you can do the same thing if you please.

  2. Best song about suicide is EASILY ‘Suicide is Painless’ BY Johnny Mandel . It is also probably is more known then all the ones on this list.

Suicide is Painless’ is the theme for the long running TV show M.A.S.H and the song is heard in the movie M.A.S.H.

    LYRICS:

Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
    I realize and I can see…

    [Refrain]:
    That suicide is painless
    It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

    [Refrain]

The game of life is hard to play
    I’m gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I’ll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.

    [Refrain]

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn’t hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it grin, but…

    [Refrain]

A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
“is it to be or not to be”
and I replied “oh why ask me?”

    ‘Cause suicide is painless
    it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
…and you can do the same thing if you choose.

  3. This is a really great top ten list Ben, Adam’s Song would definitely be my #1. Great eclectic list, I really lke the songs tat were selected. You can post this to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/ and then link back to your site. We are looking for top ten lists and our users can track back to your site. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list.

  4. What about “Suicide is an Alternative” by Suicidal Tendencies?

Can’t get much more suicidal than that.

    Except maybe S.O.D.’s “Kill Yourself”

    Can’t take it, never could
Time to end it, wish you would
Friends and family, they’re all gone
Life for you is just a con
Dig yourself a hole in the ground
Push up daisies six feet down
Take a dirt nap, buy the farm
Inject a bubble in your aim

    Kill yourself, kill yourself!
    Why don’t you kill yourself?
Don’t rely on no one else
End it all just kill yourself!
Life is just a one way ticket
    Everyone must go around
Here’s bucket go and kick it
Slit your wrists without a sound
When you go don’t make a big deal
    No dramatics, don’t overplay
Cause don’t you know that we’ll all feel
    Better once you’re gone away

  5. Alice in Chains’ Dirt:

I Have Never Felt Such Frustration
    Or Lack Of Self Control
I Want You To Kill Me
And Dig Me Under, I Wanna Live No More

One Who Doesn’t Care Is One Who Shouldn’t Be
I’ve Tried To Hide Myself From What Is
    Wrong For Me, For Me

I Want To Taste Dirty, A Stinging Pistol
In My Mouth, On My Tongue
I Want You To Scrape Me From The Walls
And Go Crazy Like You’ve Made Me

    You, You Are So Special
    You Have The Talent To
    Make Me Feel Like Dirt
    And You, You Use Your
    Talent To Dig Me Under
    And Cover Me With Dirt

  6. Five.Bolt.Main “The Gift”

Singer Chris Volz’ mother committed suicide when Chris was 10 years old.

“Please explain a couple of things to me
How could you leave and then turn your back on me?
If only we said goodbye, maybe then I would respect my life
In the end, I am so ashamed of what you did
You said that you would never leave
I didn’t even see you go
You just up and turned your back on me
For reasons I will never know
Now I am starring at an empty space
Its the place that you used to be
And the look you see upon my face
Is the gift from you to me”

  7. Alice in Chains – Dirt, is the best suicide song of all time, Elliot Smith – Fond Farewell is good also

  8. Alphaville – forever young

  9. Radiohead’s song videotape off the album in rainbows is a great suicide song. Some debate if it truly is about suicide but to me it seems that way.

    lyrics:

when i’m at the pearly gates
this will be on my videotape
    my videotape

    mephistopheles is just beneath
    reaching up to grab me

this is for the good days
and i have it all in red blue green
    red blue green

you are my center when i slip away
out of control on videotape on videotape

this is my way of saying goodbye
cause i cant do it face to face

    no matter what happens now
i’m not afraid cause i know today
was the most beautiful day i’ve ever seen

  10. U2- A Day Without Me

    Lyrics:
Starting a landslide in my ego
I look from the outside to the world I left behind
    I’m dreaming, your awake
If I was sleeping, what’s at stake

    A day without me

  11. Completely agree with the the top choice. However, I think this list isn’t complete without The Smashing Pumpkins:

    Today is the greatest
    Day I ve ever known
    Cant live for tomorrow
    Tomorrow’s much too long
    I burn my eyes out
    Before I get out

    I wanted more
    Than life could ever grant
    Bored by the chore
    Of saving face

    Today is the greatest
    Day I have ever known
    Can’t wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long
    I’ll tear my heart out
    Before I get out

    Pink ribbon scars
    That never forget
    Ive tried so hard
    To cleanse these regrets
    My angel wings
    Were bruised and restrained
    My belly stings

    Today is
    Today is
    Today is
    The greatest day
    That I have ever known

I want to turn you on
I want to turn you round
I want to turn you on
    I want to turn you

    Today is the greatest
    Today is the greatest day
    Today is the greatest day
    That I have ever known

  12. This is a really great top ten list, but what about “Needle In The Hay” by Elliott Smith. Anyone can post their own list to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list.

  13. Ummm, what about Seether’s “Like Suicide”

    “Premeditation will kill the trust
They’ll never know if you fear me
    With every second collecting dust
I feel so bloated and weary
    ’cause she belongs to heaven

She’s comin’ over like a suicide
And it’s the same old trip
The same old trip as before
    Another complicating suicide
And it’s the same old trip
The same old trip as before

    Burn…

She’ll cut you down with a single thrust
    She’s taken over too quickly
No medication can cure the lust
So say a prayer for the sickly
    ’cause she belongs to heaven

She’s comin’ over like a suicide
And it’s the same old trip
The same old trip as before
    Another complicating suicide
And it’s the same old trip
The same old trip as before… as before…

You set me up to fucking fail this time [x8]

She’s comin’ over like a suicide
And it’s the same old trip
The same old trip as before
    Another overbearing suicide
And it’s the same old trip
    The same old trip
    She’s coming over wearing genocide
And it’s the same old trip
The same old trip as before
    Another complicating suicide
And it’s the same old trip
The same old trip as before… as before…”

This song is basically all about suicide or at least most of it.

  14. Katy Perry – Cup Of Coffee
    (one of my favorites)

    I take these turns
    A bit too fast
    Trying to leave you
    In my past
    The CD skips
    Our favorite songs
    Our greatest hits
    Just don’t belong

    I really love
    To hate this
    Love hate
    Hate love relationships
    Are over-rated
    Over my dead body
    Is how this will end

    He said it’s over
    And I could go for
    Another chance to do
    This over again

    So this is it?
    After all
    We’ve been through
    We call it quits
    And-a I’m about to
    Wash my prints
Oh the little I had left

    He said it’s over
    And I could really go
    For a cup of coffee
    And an overdose

    Leave it all behind me
    You’ll see it
    When you finally find me
    Comatose or pretty close
    Cover up copy
    And an overdose

    I pop these pills
    Like cracker jacks
    And the price
    That plays dice
    Just watching you react
    When your depressed you
    Sleep too much
    I’m not sure
    If I’m waking up

    It’s over-rated
    Over my dead body
    Is how this will end
    You said it’d over
    And I could go
    For another chance to do
    This over again

    So this is it?
    After all
    We’ve been through
    We call it quits
    And-a i’m about
    To wash my prints
Oh The little I had left

    He said it’s over
    And I could really go
    For a cup of coffee
    And an overdose

    Leave it all behind me
    You’ll see it
    When you finally find me
    Comatose or pretty close
    Cup of coffee
    And an overdose

    He said it’s over
    And I could really go
    For a cup of coffee
    And an overdose
    Leave it all behind me
    You’ll see it
    When you finally find me
    Comatose or pretty close

    I stood in line
    Without you
    I stood in line
    Without you
    And I don’t tell you
    What it is
    I thought about you
    Well without you
    Is everything I’ve got

  15. Don’t Fear the Reaper – Blue Oyster Cult

    All our times have come
    Here but now they’re gone
    Seasons don’t fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain..we can be like they are
Come on baby…don’t fear the reaper
Baby take my hand…don’t fear the reaper
We’ll be able to fly…don’t fear the reaper
    Baby I’m your man…

    Valentine is done
    Here but now they’re gone
    Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity…Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday…Like Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday…Redefine happiness
Another 40,000 coming everyday…We can be like they are
Come on baby…don’t fear the reaper
Baby take my hand…don’t fear the reaper
We’ll be able to fly…don’t fear the reaper
    Baby I’m your man…

    Love of two is one
    Here but now they’re gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn’t go on
Then the door was open and the wind appeared
    The candles blew then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared…saying don’t be afraid
Come on baby…and she had no fear
And she ran to him…then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodby…she had become like they are
She had taken his hand…she had become like they are
Come on baby…don’t fear the reaper

  16. Sum 41 : Walking Disaster

    I haven’t been home for a while
    I’m sure everything’s the same
Mom and Dad both in denial
An only child to take the blame

Sorry, Mom, but I don’t miss you
    Father’s no name you deserve
I’m just a kid with no ambitions
Wouldn’t come home for the world

    Never know what I’ve become
The king of all that’s said and done
    The forgotten son

    This cities buried in defeat
I walk along these no-name streets
    Wave goodbye to All…..

    As I fall…

    At the dead-end I begin
To burn a bridge of innocence
    Satisfaction guaranteed
    A pillow-weight catastrophe

    Our own mission nowhere bound
    Inhibitions underground
    A shallow grave I
    Have dug all by myself

And now I’ve been gone for so long
I can’t remember who was wrong
    All innocence is long gone
I pledge allegiance to a world of disbelief
    Where I belong

    A walking disaster
    The son of all bastards
    You regret you made me
It’s too late to save me
    (You regret you made me
It’s too late to save me)

As far as I can tell
It’s just voices in my head
    Am I talking to myself?
‘Cause I don’t know what I just said

    (And she said)
As far as where I fell
    Maybe I’m better off dead
Am I at the end of nowhere
Is this as good as it gets?

And now I’ve been gone for so long
I can’t remember who was wrong
    All innocence is long gone
I pledge allegiance to a world of disbelief
    Where I belong

    A walking disaster
    The son of all bastards
    You regret you made me
It’s too late to save me
(To save me, to save me, to save me, …)

    (”It’s too late”) [x2]

To save me, to save me, to save me, to save me

And now I’ve been gone for so long
I can’t remember who was wrong
    All innocence is long gone
I pledge allegiance to a world of disbelief
    Where I belong

    A walking disaster
    The son of all bastards
    You regret you made me
It’s too late to save me

I will be home in a while
You don’t have to say a word
I can’t wait to see you smile
Wouldn’t miss it for the world

I will be home in a while
You don’t have to say a word
I can’t wait to see you smile
Wouldn’t miss it for the world

  17. Staring Down the Barrel of a 45 – by Shinedown

Send away for a priceless gift
One not subtle, one not on the list
Send away for a perfect world
    One not simply, so absurd
In these times of doing what you’re told
Keep these feelings, no one knows
What ever happened to the young man’s heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart

And I’m staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of a normal life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45

Send a message to the unborn child
Keep your eyes open for a while
In a box high up on the shelf, left for you, no one else
There’s a piece of a puzzle known as life
Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight

What ever happened to the young man’s heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart

And I’m staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of a normal life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45

    Everyone’s pointing their fingers
    Always condemning me
And nobody knows what I believe
    I believe

And I’m staring down the barrel of a 45,
And I’m swimming through the ashes of a normal life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45

And I’m staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of a normal life
There is no real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45
